MARDI GRAS 2024

by reservations@coastal30a.net

Originating centuries ago, Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, marks the culmination of Carnival season - a period of revelry and indulgence before the solemnity of Lent.  Its roots intertwine with religous observances, dating back to medieval Europe and brought to the Americas by French settlers.

New Orleans, Louisiana, stands as the quintessential hub of Mardi Gras celebration. Many are unaware that Mardi Gras began in the city of Mobile, AL in 1703.   Yet, its influence and celebrations have rippled across continents, each region adding its unique flair while honoring the festival's core spirit.

Parades feature intricately designed floats adorned with ornate decorations.  Bands play lively tunes as participants toss colorful beads and trinkets to crowds, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy.

Moreover, the culinary tapestry prepared during Mardi Gras is as diverse as the revelers themsves.  Indulge in the flavors of Creole and Cajun cuisine - gumbo, jambalaya, king cakes - a feast that embodies the fusion of cultures that define this jubilant celebration.

Beneath the glamour and celebration, Mardi Gras carries profund significance.  It symbolizes the resilience of communities and the triumph of joy over adversity.  Throughout history, the Mardi Gras tradition has persisted, weathering storms, wars, and pandemics - a testament to the human spirit's unyielding vitality and need for collective celebration.

So, let the colors swirl, the music soar, and the spirit of Mardi Gras ignite a flame of celebration within.  Check out some of the local Mardi Gras celebrations happening around 30A!

What is king cake?

What is King cake? Traditionally, king cakes are Danish pastry dough, braided with cinnamon and baked with in the shape of a hollow circle. Think of it almost as a giant donut-shaped cinnamon roll. They’re usually iced and often filled with cream cheese or fruit. And oh yeah — there’s usually a plastic baby inside the cake somewhere. Customarily, whomever finds the baby in his or her slice has to buy next year’s cake.
